Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the avoidance and alteration of irregular teeth. Orthodontics also practice in the diagnosis and treatment of jaw, face and bite irregularities.

What causes orthodontic problems?

Although malocclusions are typically inherited, there are great amounts that are acquired.

Some inherited problems include crowding of teeth, excessive space between teeth, and missing teeth. There are also a wide variety of other irregularities of the jaws, teeth and face.

Some examples of acquired malocclusions are trauma (accidents), thumb sucking, airway obstruction, dental disease or premature loss of primary or permanent teeth.

Despite how orthodontic problems have occurred, many of these issues affect the alignment of the teeth, the facial development and appearance as well.
